Don Bay ★★ $$

Curry Udon @ $9.90 AUD

Don Bay is a small Japanese restaurant which is just right in one of the alleys at Collin street. There are very limited seating so they focus mainly on takeovers and fast turnover. Don Bay serves rather cheap authentic Japanese lunches which ranges around $10 and they have quite a number of choices.

Agedashi Tofu @ $3.90 AUD
Deep fried beancurd with ginger flavoured sauce. Sweet and savoury but couldn't taste much of the ginger.  Beancurd was soaked with too much sauce so the texture was not that great. I would suggest to give this dish a miss.
Oyako Don @ $10.80 AUD
Skinless chicken cooked with egg, spring onions, onions and garnished with dried seaweeds. Also sweet and savoury. The egg was rather dry and lacked of fragrance. Definitely had better ones.
Chicken Udon @ $9.90 AUD
Udon in soup with skinless chicken pieces and mushroom sprinkled with spring onions. Clear and tasty chicken soup. Not too bad but doesn't have the WOW factor in it.
Curry Udon @ $9.90 AUD
Same ingredients as the Chicken Udon but with a slightly diluted curry soup. The curry was sweet and salty but not really that spicy. There was also a hint of sour to it. The ingredients didn't really complement well with one another.
Mixed Udon @ $9.90 AUD
Udon in soup with kakiage (a kind of tempura), seaweed, mushroom and beancurd. Similar with the Chicken udon but with different ingredients.
Katsu Curry @ $9.80 AUD
Crumbed pork cooked with curry sauce and garnished with pickles. Curry was thick, salty, sweet and sour with a hint of spiciness to it. The first time I had the curry it tasted really authentic but the second time it was rather disappointing. Can be rather inconsistent. The amount of pork they gave was rather little.

Verdict (Highest-10)
Food: 6 (Average authentic Japanese food. Can be rather inconsistent.)
Service: 7 (Friendly Japanese cashier and food came quick. )
Ambiance: 6 (Cramped but clean and serene. Seating not that comfortable.)
Overall: 6.5 (Would say its authentic Japanese food but lacking in quality. For the price you are paying for the quality is acceptable. Portion is not that big but good enough to keep you not hungry. It gets rather busy during lunch hour so try going early as the food also taste better.)

Price: $8.80-11.90 AUD per main
