Spice 9 Girl (辣九妹) ★★ $$$

Poached Fish served with Pickled Vegetable Soup @ $24.80 AUD

Spice 9 Girl is a newly opened Chinese restaurant in Carlton which is just opposite Lincoln Square. Serving Szechuan Cuisine at cheap prices and also big portions.

Grilled Handmade Pork Dumplings @ $8.50 AUD
Dumpling grilled till a light crisp on the skin. Filling consists of minced pork mixed with garlic and chives. Fillings were rather little, the dumpling felt rather hollow.
Stir Fried Double Cooked Sliced Pork with Capsicum & Onion @ $16.80 AUD
This dish was not too bad. Meat was tasty with a strong savoury taste but the meat was a bit dry though.
Poached Fish served with Pickled Vegetable Soup @ $24.80 AUD
When this dish arrived it was really fragrant. Soup was sour and savoury with lots of fish. Probably the best one that I've tried so far in Melbourne. Careful of the pepper balls though as it have numbing effects.
Stir Fried Tofu with Minced Pork in Chili sauce @ $13.80 AUD
Also known as Mapo Tofu. Tofu cubes cooked with minced pork, pepper balls and chili sauce sprinkled with spring onions. Very different from the usual Mapo Tofu as this one instead of being spicy it had a strong numbing effect because of the pepper balls. There were loads of pepper balls which had a minty and peppery taste to it.
Eggplant in Claypot in Szechwan Chili & Garlic sauce @ S18.80 AUD
Eggplant cooked  in a Claypot with Chili and Garlic sauce. This dish had a salty savoury taste to it. Very similar to a fish sauce. Was a bit too oily.

Verdict (Highest-10)
Food: 6 (The poached fish with pickled vegetable soup was great. The other dishes were normal. Some might find the taste a bit too extreme.)
Service: 4 (Food came quick.)
Ambiance: 4 (Floor was a bit oily though. The place is normally crowded with mainland Chinese people.)
Overall: 6 (Would probably come back for the soup. One thing for sure is that the portion is big. The taste might be a bit extreme especially the numbing effects of the pepper balls. However, Szechuan people actually enjoys this as from where they came from the numbing effects soothe them due to the humidity.)

Price: $16.80 - 36.80 AUD per main (Dinner menu)

  1. hahahaha ambience 4 cos it was flooded with mainland china people! U racist tooot ahahah. Anyways I find that pure China styled food is pretty extreme. I dislike their spicy because the way China has it defined is rather chemical like. I prefer Malaysian/Thai was of making spicy tasty!

  2. Haha...now that you mention it. It sounded quite racist. I actually didn't mean to say the ambiance was bad because of them but rather the floor was oily and kind of sticky. Anyway, I guess different people have different liking of spiciness so it really depends the environment you came from.
